What We Do
SCADO provides full-scope criminal defense representation when the primary Public Defender’s Office cannot, due to a conflict of interest. We handle the same types of cases with the same level of commitment:
Defense of the Accused
Misdemeanors, felonies, and serious offenses in Santa Cruz County Superior Court.
Holistic Defense
Defense teams with attorneys, investigators, social workers, and advocates working together.
Immigration Defense
Every case is analyzed for immigration consequences under Padilla v. Kentucky.
Youth Advocacy
Juvenile delinquency representation with age-appropriate, trauma-informed advocacy.
Mental Health & LPS
Representation in involuntary commitment and conservatorship proceedings.
Collaborative Courts
Behavioral Health Court, Veterans Court, Reentry Court, and PACT.
Welcome
For more than four decades, our attorneys have defended the accused in Santa Cruz County. We believe that every person charged with a crime deserves an attorney whose only loyalty is to them — an attorney who will listen, investigate, fight, and advocate without compromise.
Our office exists because the justice system sometimes creates conflicts that prevent the primary Public Defender from representing you. When that happens, you are assigned to us. We want you to know: being assigned to the Alternate Defender does not mean you receive a lesser defense. You receive the same quality, the same commitment, and the same resources — from an independent team that is solely focused on you.
If you or a loved one has been assigned to our office, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help.
